Vastu (Vah-stoo) was “created” in India many thousands of years ago, pre-dating the Hindu religion. Ancient Vedic texts have described this philosophy with Vastu also becoming known as “Vedic Architecture”. The Vedic texts are “records of the vibrations, or laws, of nature” and it's according to these vibrations, that the ancients built their buildings.

In Vastu, buildings are to be oriented to the EAST (ie the FRONT ENTRYWAY of your space should face east) to be in accordance with the path the Sun travels daily. It is off of this main directive that the placement of all other rooms is based. Now, there are other “teachings” of Vastu (like the 3 schools of Feng Shui) which are based off of different family lineages, although they are not “formal” schools as they are referred to in Feng Shui.

Front door placement:
E = enlightenment
N = happiness & prosperity

Bed placement:
E and S is OK for the headboard to be placed

On a scientific, or “Western” note, neurologists have found that those studied who FACED EAST showed more coherence & cognitive activity! Heart disease, depression & anxiety are also being studied in terms of the affect direction has on the person and their recovery … VERY interesting!

Feng Shui vs Vastu:
Feng Shui (compass & Black Hat Sect) use a Bagua Board to “activate” Life Areas and help determine spac-plan, color, accessory. The Compass School uses the person (s) & the building's birth dates to determine good / bad directions & then orients the Bagua according to that … BHS does not. Bagua is directed to the entryway of the space. Vastu only orients to the E, or in some cases N, cardinal direction. The “birth” dates of the space's owners only comes into play when determining dates for various construction projects. Once the space is complete, then only the cardinal directions come into play.

Feng Shui is concerned with room AND furniture placement to help increase / decrease energy. Vastu only concerned with room placement w / in the space.

Feng Shui traditions state that the person's intentions, emotions and activities play a part in their fortunes / health. Vastu takes the position that if the space is built according to Vastu principles, then good health / fortune will have had regardless of belief.

In Feng Shui, there are “cures” or “tweaks” as I call them, that you can apply to your space to create positive energy flow & make your space work for you. Vastu does not-it is either built accordingly or it's not. Vastu is of the mind that it is better to tear down & begin again instead of “tweak”.

In BOTH traditions, proportion is important. Your own space, surrounding buildings / landscaping … all come into play to ensure proper energy flow.

BOTH are also concerned with the surrounding impacts of the neighborhood-neighboring homes, noise, landscaping, water features …

You CAN NOT use BOTH traditions in the same space. Although it has been done, you must be sure that the schools are compatible! Meaning, you could use the Black Hat Sect school of thought as long as the home lined up with the E for the front door. You could not use together if using the Compass School & you're a “W” oriented person … Confusing, YES! Research, find a philosophy that corresponds to you, your lifestyle & values.

Urban Home
One should be at peace with the environment. We mostly find this peace in whatever we do & where ever we go. Creating an urban home has to do with certain earthiness that we want to exude and being in that place has to practice tranquility. Using colors or layout or being filled with objects that would connote restfulness and peace. That once you step inside this urban home, the refreshing & invigorating smell of eucalyptus and green tea permeates the air, invading your senses and immediately putting you in a state of relaxation.

Cultural inspired home
Let me give you you a glimpse on how I imagine this kind of sanctuary .. A Modern Japanese scheme .. let me fascinate you with the foyer- coming in the house. From its doors made of wood, the interesting design of the floor achieved through the use of different materials. The right side of the foyer is a wall of housing Japanese dolls. The left side contains a fountain where water continuously falls through clear glass, ending in a stone-cladded pool. When stepping in the living area imbued with different neutral shades. Moving forward, one is refurbished by the equally zen like powder room with series of stone steps embedded of with white pebbles. The dining & kitchen area seems to be the most modern of all. The bedrooms are done in white with dark wood-toned furniture. The only difference is the colors of the beddings and accessories. Harmonizing modern & Japanese styles reflecting the sense & style of creating a culturally inspired home.

Tropical Setting home
If asking people where they want to live and most will say either on a mountaintop with a very spectacular view of the surrounding of the forest or by the beach, burying their feet in fine white sand while sipping their weight of choice. An Oasis of green amid the hustle & rush of the city we are welcomed by a front garden in a charming pond punctuated by the sound of trickling water, leading visitors to the foyer accented with big terracotta jars. The planting is composed of shrubs like silver dust, ficus, assorted tropical plants. The water feature combined with an appealing planting somehow gives idea of what to expect in this garden haven. Sunlight is filtered. The resulting scenery is a stunning visual display of color, scale & form. Seeing this kind of atmosphere prompted ne to reevaluate my preference for quiet, far flung locales set amidst swaying palm trees and nurturing surroundings. Being in the middle of everything does not necessarily mean being far away from the things that make life worthwhile.

Hideaways …. A seaside treasure ..
If you are a beach fanatic you would likewise think of a home resort. All related to the sea ambiance-getting tanned, enjoying the sea breeze, warming up near the campfire while eating barbecued marshmallows, sleeping on a hammock coconut trees. With clear skies and sunny weather to boot. Using raw indigenous materials blending with construction basics.

In keeping with something new & something old concept. A Vibrant color scheme plays a key role in the inviting atmosphere of this home using bright yellow on the exteriors blends a happy & sunny outlook. Some walls painted in red-violet and in blue, ceilings and floors are kept white. Whimsical images of animals to add a playful touch. Indeed this kind of sanctuary can simply define pure enjoyment of nature's beauty and intimate family bonding perfect for hideaways.

Map Bagua – Feng Shui Tool For Your Home

The map bagua is an eight sided diagram that is used to represent different aspects of a person's life. The map bagua is an eight sided diagram that is used to represent different aspects of a person's life. The nine sections, which includes the center portion, symbolize career, wisdom, family, wealth, fame, love, creativity, helpful people and health. Each section is also paired with a color and the direction of the five elements are mapped out as well. This special feng shui tool is used to locate the areas of a home or an individual room of the home that is associated with the nine sections. As soon as you can locate the areas that need changing, you will be able to apply simple decoration techniques to it in a way that will improve that aspect of your life.

To use a bagua, stand by the front door of your home facing in or by the entrance of a room. Hold the diagram out in front of you with the fame section facing the wall opposite you and the career section directly in front of you. This shows that the entrance is a reflection of your career, the wall exhibition representations your fame and reputation, and all the other seven sections of the bagua can be mapped out in a similar manner. Use this tool to find out the colors and elements that correlate to the different parts of the given space.

Colors are an easy fix for bad feng shui areas and can be used to effectively improve problem areas of your life. If for example, you are looking to attract love or to maintain a healthy relationship with your current partner, locate the love corner of your room or your home using the bagua. You will notice on the diagram that the color pink is associated with the love corner. All you need to do is add a little more pink in that area to improve your love life. The same technique can be applied to all other areas of your life, using the colors specified on the bagua.

Each one of the five elements can also be found on the bagua. The care section of the space, which is normally where the entrance is, represents the element water. The fame and reputation section is associated with fire. The children and creativity section is used to represent the metal element. The family section is associated with the wood element. The element earth is directly in the center of the room where the health section is located. Equipped with this knowledge, you will be able to balance the energy of the room or the entire home by simply adding the missing elements.

The map bagua is a very useful tool that is used by professional feng shui practitioners and novices alike. It is so easy to use that it has been heavily adopted by most of the western world. Just use the steps above to create a basic reading of your home and each room of your house. If you are looking for a more accurate and detailed reading, you should seek the services of a professional practitioner. They will use a feng shui compass to find the exact direction of your house and then use that measurement to create a bagua map that is specific to your home.

Simple Feng Shui Hacks

Looking to get the most out of your Feng Shui efforts? Take these factors into consideration when implementing your cures:

1) You are intimately connected to your home or office's energy, so follow your intuition when making changes. If you clue into how your space feels, you'll get a good idea about what needs work, how you're going to fix those problem areas, and the best time to make the changes. When you notice particularly pleasant or discordant feelings pop up, make note of them and act accordingly. In general, the sooner you act on your feelings the better. When you know something needs to be changed or enhanced, acting within a couple of days is generally better than waiting around for the problem to fix itself.

2) Track the effects of your cures. If you implement Feng Shui with specific goals in mind (such as stimulating your love life) than make sure that those goals are being met after you implement a change to your environment. Pay attention to how you feel in that area of your life, how you are now acting, and what you are now appealing. If you are getting your desired results, stick with the cure and consider enhancing it. Even a little bit of progress means you are doing something right, so feel encouraged even if the results do not come in as fast as you'd like. If you are not getting your desired results, try and figure out what is not working and implementing a new cure.

3) Keep the specifics of your desired results to yourself. By keeping the specifics of your cures and what you hope to implement with them to yourself, you make sure that you keep the cure's energy within your life and you do not spread it around. It's fine to tell people that you're playing with Feng Shui and to discuss the matter impersonally, but explaining the details of your cures and what you wish to fix with them will drain the cure of its power.

4) Never stop considering and implementing Feng Shui. Just as your life and your goals are fluid and ever changing, so should your cures. While it would be nice if we could just implement one major Feng Shui overhaul and rest assured that all our ever-changing needs are going to be met for all time, that's just not how the practice works. Every time you either need a change in your life or realize that you've been lax in your practice, you need to implement cures and improvements in your environment.

5) Take concrete and continuous action towards your goals. Feng Shui is not a genie waiting to grant your every wish- Fen Shui is a practice of optimizing your environments energetic potential to help support and enhance what you are working toward in your life. After all, no esoteric practice will make you wealthy if you simply sit around in your underwear playing X-Box all day. If you do not work intelligently and diligently to your goals, even the best Feng Shui will just be soil without a seed.

Quick and Easy Feng Shui Hacks For Greater Wealth

1) Most of the energy that comes into your house flows in through your front door. Make sure your front path is clear from clutter (such as bikes, overgrown or dead plants, shoes, papers, etc). 1) Most of the energy that comes into your house flows in through your front door. Make sure your front path is clear from clutter (such as bikes, overgrown or dead plants, shoes, papers, etc). It's important that you keep this main entrance well lit at all times. Obviously this is less of a concern during the day when the sun is out, but placing as many lights as you can on your door (while staying tasteful) is an important way to keep energy working towards your house. Like is attracted to like, and positive energy will flood to your well lit and inviting doorway.

2) Adding living energy to your wealth corner is a great way to improve your finances. One of the best sources of living energy is a sturdy, healthy houseplant. Not only does the plant provide plenty of color and life to the corner, but if properly inclined it will continue to grow, providing more and more energy and momentum to your finances.

3) Make sure your desk or work space is located in proper relation to your door. The best place for your work station is as far from the door as possible, while directly facing the door, preferably with your back to your wealth corner. This will ensure faster decision making, increased focus and relaxation, and a stronger feeling of confidence and control.

4) Feng Shui associates the flow of water with the flow of wealth, and optimizing and empowering the water sources in your house is a great way to stimulate your wealth energy. Setting up an exterior fountain that is set so the water flows and bubbles towards your house is a great way to attract this positive energy. Fountains that feature water circulating from a pool are better than fountains where the water disappears. Make sure that the water is fresh, clean and pure (not murky at all) and that it is in perpetual movement and not stagnant.

5) Because Feng Shui links water and wealth, it's important that you eliminate any leaks and plug any drains. Keeping your toilet seat lowered (especially when you flush) and your bathroom doors closed are good ideas too. Essentially, you want to only have drains and areas where water leaves your house active when they are in immediate use.

6) Dining room tables, nice plates and dishes, and food all symbolize and attract wealth, so it's a good idea to keep your kitchen and dining room well stocked. Keeping decorative bowls filled with fruit on your table is a good idea, as is placing a mirror facing your table to multiply its energy.

7) The wealth corner in your bedroom is one of the most important energetic spots for your finances. Keeping plants and running water fountains here is a good idea, though sometimes the water fountain can be too energetically stimulating if it's running while you attempt to sleep. Placing energy gathering items, such as crystals or wind chimes, is sometimes a better idea than a fountain in your bedroom when it comes to ensuring a good night's sleep.

Quick and Easy Feng Shui Hacks For Romance and Marriage

1) One of the most important factors for the energy surrounding your love life is the placement of your bed. On the one hand, your bed's placement greatly influences how well you sleep at night, which affects your energy and your mood. Ideally, your bed is placed as far from your door as possible. If your front door is in your front right corner, your bed is ideally placed in your back left corner, and vice versa. Make sure your beds' headboard is placed firmly against the wall, and that the door is clearly visible when lying down.

2) Your bedroom is a place for peace, beauty and connection. It is not a place for distractions. Anything that does not directly have to do with resting or connecting with your partners hurts your relationship. That means minimizing all work related materials, TVs, computers, your phone, and anything else that will distract you. These distractions include bookcases and anything else that is overly stimulating in the wrong ways.

3) If your bedroom is cluttered, your love life and relationships will also be cluttered. Minimize tall, bulky, imposing furniture. Remove stacks of papers, books, DVDs, whatever. Keep the space clean and clear. And always, always make your bed.

4) Make sure all the love corners in your house are well optimized. This includes within your bathroom, your kitchen, your living room, your guest room, your study, your lawn, etc. While the love corner in your bedroom is the most powerful factor for your romantic success, all of these other corners contribute to your hearts' energetic flow.

5) Pink and Red sheets are ideal for your bed. Pink sheets attract love, tenderness and relationships. Red sheets bring in passion and sizzle to your bedroom. Decide which one you want, or buy both and alternate according to your desires.

6) Do NOT keep mementos or items from previous relationships in your bedroom. When you end a relationship or separate from a partner, remove any items that will either bring back painful memories or leave them energetically hanging around. While you do not needlessly need to remove all these items while you are still mourning the relationship, you must make sure they are all gone before you start looking for your next partner. If you are a serial monogamist and change partners infrequently, it's also a good idea to purchase new bed sheets after each relationship.

7) Keep plants or trees in your relationship corners. Planting healthy new trees in the relationship corner of your yard is a good idea when looking to either strengthen or form a new relationship, while placing plants in the relationship corner of your rooms (especially your bedroom) is a great cure-all. Of course, this predicates that you do not have your bed in your relationship corner.

8) Keep pairs of items in your relationship corner. Make sure your bed has two pillows, make sure you have two candles, make sure any hanging artwork displays a happy couple (or more if you are aiming for more than one partner). By making room for one or more partner in your life, and by sending the energetic symbol that you desire at least a pairing in your love life, you make your intentions unmistakable.

1) Your stove's placement determines much of your bodily energy. It's best to have your stove positioned so that you can see the doorway while cooking to make sure you are not started when preparing meals. Unfortunately, most stoves are placed against whatever wall has the proper outputs, so you'll have to fix the position as best you can. Placing a mirror behind the stove allows you to easily see who is coming and going into the kitchen, even if your back is turned to the door while you saute. Mirrors also have powerful energetic qualities, doubling the power of whatever they reflect, and this placement will greatly enhance your stoves energy.

2) Because your stove is the centerpiece of your kitchen, and because it plays such a large energetic role, it's important to make sure it is clean and in good working order. In many ways your stove reflects your body's condition, and an imbalanced stove generally will reflect a bodily imbalance.

3) Keeping all of your homes energy systems and hubs in good working order will greatly improve your health. These systems include your electrical, heating, plumbing and air conditioning systems. These energy pathways refer directly to your own body's energetic systems, and keeping your house flowing smoothly will keep your own systems from failing you.

4) Red symbolizes health, fire, passion and vitality, so naturally it's a good color to include in your bedroom. While red sheets are a great way to add flames to your sex life, they also give you a more general feeling of energy and stamina. Specifically, placing a flat red sheet between mattress and your box-spring is a great energizer.

5) Avoid or neutralize sharp corners in your house. These are especially harmful when they point at a place where you spend a lot of time. For instance, a sharp room corner pointing at your bed will send negative energy at you while you sleep, interfering with your ability to properly rest; a sharp corner pointing at you while you work will inhibit focus and concentration, and so forth. If the sharp corner is removable, remove it (such as a piece of furniture you can replace). If you can not remove the corner (such as large furniture or the edges of walls) than you will need to blunt it with round objects, curtains or large plants.

6) Exposed beams or slanted ceilings are also problematic, as they push oppressive energy down onto you. Hanging flutes or crystals, draping them with cloth, installing a drop ceiling or otherwise minimizing the push is necessary to diffuse this energy.

7) Minimize the amount of chemicals in your house. Applying air and water filters helps greatly reduce the flow of pollutants entering your house, while using non-toxic and naturally based cleaners will make your house dramatically cleaned. ElectroMagnetic Fields are another source of pollution in your house. They are the fields produced by electronic devices such as computers, televisions, radios, etc. and they are most likely draining on your body. Keeping these devices far from your body, or implementing devices that reduce EMF emissions is a good strategy, especially if you spend a lot of your time near these devices.

My friend from the Cincinnati area visited me last week for my recent birthday. I apologized for our rainy Southern California weather, which prompted her to reply, “Oh no! At least I see green out there!” This made me think that sometimes there is a need to discuss some possible “Winter Blues” feng shui fixes.

The term “winter blues” is a great linguistic hint to what we are wanting to counterbalance: cold or frigid, and possibly cool, dark colors. Here are some quick tips (go back to the nine traditional cures in my book for a deaf look) to think about if you want to “dig out” from under the winter blues:

1. Balance dark with light: Now's NOT the time to be blocking out any light during the day. Open sheers, blinds and curtains to the max to allow the warmth of the sun to penetrate your home. You may want to step up the wattage in light fixtures in critical places like at your desk or kitchen during this time added nighttime help if you still can not get enough natural light during the day (but be mindful of the natural rhythm of night) being a darker time of day.)

And let's not forget the fire element. Fire's movement is “up” — a perfect counter to “depressed” feelings and feeling “down.” Add candles and stoke the fireplace (even if you have to go so far as a fireplace screensaver if you are fireplace-less.)

One more idea is to use a big mirror to reflect the sunlight into a space that is sorely needing more light during this time of year.

2. Balance cold with warmth: Now, this can be either a real, physical temperature change, (crank up the heat), or a perceived one. Here are some eco-friendly “perceived ones:” Add vibrant colors. Think South America or Mexico. A temporary boost of bright, lively, warm colors can at a minimum, perk up your attitude, and go so far as making you feel like you are on a mini tropical vacation! Tropical placemats on the table or a vase of tropical flowers in the kitchen may be the perfect antidote!

Take a look at your art. Now's NOT the time for dark, nighttime snow scenes. A good replacement choice might be art with the sun or bright green foliage depicted in it. And getting back to the “up” discussion, remove any pictures that have people NOT smiling in them. Sure, bringing them back in the summer if you want to, but they're not helping if you have a tendency towards SAD or “feeling down.”

It's worth taking a little time to review your home each season as each one brings its own attributes and energies to possibly balance. Happy rest of winter!

There are many aspects of feng shui home decorating, all of which are important to create better movement of the 'qi' or energy in your home. There are many aspects of feng shui home decorating, all of which are important to create better movement of the 'qi' or energy in your home. This energy which is often referred to as 'life force' can easily become stagnant within a home and have a negative impact on the residents. A simple way to solve this problem is to redecorate the home in a way that will tackle the bad energy and promote the 'qi' to flow freely. There are many effective ways of decorating that will have a positive influence, finding the right combination is key.

The first way to tackle the bad 'qi' is to tackle the clutter. Most of us accumulate way too much junk and are not willing to let go of anything, resulting in a home that is filled with clutter. A home that is full of clutter is a reflection of a life that is cluttered as well. Getting rid of unnecessary objects in your home is a very important first step, it is also sometimes the hardest. Go through each room of your house and sort through everything you have. Get rid of anything you do not need or want. There might be some things that you might not want to part with, but do not needlessly belong in that particular room, simply put them in storage somewhere.

Next, you will have to depend on the bagua to map out areas of individual rooms or your entire home and locate the corners that refer to the different aspects of your life. As soon as you figure this out, decide on the areas of your life that you would like to improve and use home decorations to make that happen. You can use colors related to the area of your life that needs improving in the specified corner or through the home. Furniture is often the thing that gets in the way of free flowing 'qi', if this is the case with the furniture in your rooms, simply rearrange them according to feng shui guidelines.

There are specific feng shui tools that can be used to cure problem areas within a home. These tools include crystals, water fountains, wind chimes and mirrors. Some are used for protection while others are used for tackling bad and activating good 'qi'. All of these tools are powerful enough to handle any kind of negative energy. If you do not like the look of these specific tools, you can just use regular home decor items instead. Simply choose objects that are applicable in the different areas mapped out on the bagua through the home.

There are many things that can be done to optimize the areas related to each section of the bagua. If you are looking to attract love or improve your relationship, work on the love corner of your bedroom or of your house. Add more pink to that area, display decor that comes in pairs or put up images that makes you think of love. If you are looking to improve your finances, activate the 'qi' in your wealth corner by adding more purple and water related objects. Try these and other feng shui home decorating tips out for yourself.

Feng shui interior design describes using design elements to improve the 'qi' or energy of a home. Each room of the home serves a specific purpose and the interior design of the individual rooms will carry out that purpose with the help of feng shui. In this respect, different principals and techniques must be applied to the different rooms. One size does not fit all in this case. Make the most out of each individual room by using totally unique cures and remedies.

The purpose of the bedroom is to be the room in the house that promotes rest, relaxation and romance. It is meant to be a place that brings out calmness and tranquility. In order to do this, colors play an important role. Loud colors are the last thing we want to use, because they are too much of a distraction and actually promotes restlessness. Furniture placement is also a key factor. The bed is the main feature of the room and must be displayed in a command position, which is diagonal from the door. There are many other techniques you can use to optimize the bedroom, many of which are related to love. The love corner is another central part of the bedroom, make good use of this area to attract love or maintain good relationships.

The purpose of the living room is to be the room in the house for get togethers. It is meant for family gatherings and entertaining guests. Because of this, the living room needs to be a place that promotes conversation and should be optimized for family bonding. In order to do this, the main focus is on how the seating of this room is arranged. Sofas and chairs are invited to be placed in a semi circular shape to achieve this purpose. Family photographs should also be a feature of this room. Other great additions include artwork and live plants.

The purpose of the kitchen is to feed and nourish the entire family. It is thought to be one of the most important rooms of the house, because it symbolizes growth and prosperity for all members of he family. The stove is the primary focus of the kitchen and its burners actually represent wealth. A stove located inside an island is the ideal position, because the cook should be able to have a good view of the entire kitchen. It is important that he or she can see who comes through the door. If the stove is built against a wall, a good feng shui remedy is to add mirrors behind the stove so anything in back is still visible.

The purpose of the home office is to be the part of the home that work is done, it has to be optimized in a way that promotes productivity and will help guarantee success. In this case the desk is the most important piece of furniture in the room and must be located in a commanding position with a clear view of the door. Using a map bagua, locate the wealth and career corners for further feng shui design. The home office is an ideal room to use live plants such as the money tree or lucky bamboo, both of which are used to attract wealth.

As you can see, there are many different feng shui interior design techniques for each room of the home. Creating the right balance between all these rooms is what makes everything come together. The different areas of your life can be harmonized as a result of creating this great balance within your home. With the bedroom working towards love, the living room promoting your relationships, the kitchen helping to generate wealth and the home office building success for your business, all these different areas of your life begin to fall in place.

When you go house hunting, it's important to have some basic knowledge of feng shui principles to help with the decision making process. There are a number of things to look out for, all of which will help you determine whether or not the house has good 'qi' or energy associated with it. If there are too many problem areas, it's an indication that you will be negatively impacted if you decide to live there.

Once inside the house, you must carefully observe the structure and entire floor plan of the house. Things to look out for include slanted ceilings, exposed ceiling beams, missing doors and corners. Other important structural features such as the position of doors in relation to windows, the location of the stairs in relation to the front door and more are all factors to take into consideration. Problem areas will very easily create bad feng shui, but keep in mind that there are cures for these problems. These cures can be very effective and they are accomplished by using simple tools such as crystal balls, wind chimes, water fountains and mirrors. The only reason to completely reject a house is if there are way too many problem areas.

There are also a number of outside influences that you need to be aware of. The surrounding community is just as important as the house itself. Go around the neighborhood to get an idea of some of the other things that can affect your life. Avoid buying a house that is located near cemeteries, police stations, hospitals, waste management facilities or any other sites that could adversely affect your home. Landscaping in the front of the house should be inviting for the 'qi' to flow right into your home. Make sure the lawn and shrubs are fresh and not wilting, and also check for trees blocking the main entrance.

Remember to keep these tips in mind when you are on the hunt for a new house. Another cool tip that should never be overlooked is to get to know the current homeowners. Find out the reason they are selling, this is a good indicator of how the feng shui will absolutely affect you if you choose to live there. It's a good sign if the current homeowners are leaving to move onto bigger and better things. If you already live in a home that you purchased, it's not too late to put these tips to use either. Find out more about the structure of your home and the environment around you, then use your findings to determine the correct remedies to use for a quick fix.
